Half handle half knife

LucidiPevere Studio, an Italian design firm, has come up with the novel idea of reconfiguring the conventional kitchen chopping knife into one that is a half-circle with it’s handle being the other half.
When not in use the blade can be encased in a protective sheath that is made of the same material so that when hidden it becomes donut shaped.
Okay, here’s the problem with that. First, clearly this gadget is clearly about form rather than function. Yes, it works well as it is designed to fit ergonomically in your hand while chopping nuts, chocolate, herb, etc. but is has its drawbacks.
Food can easily gather or get trapped in the crevices where the blade and handle are joined and if the blade is not kept completely clean and food residue can transfer to the handle’s sheath.
Also the company’s website give no product information, e.g., what the blade is made of, whether it is dishwasher safe, how to sharpen the blade when it becomes dull over time, etc.
While the Chop is a cleverly designed kitchen tool it is more for looks than efficiency mainly because the way your hand is positioned on the handle hides what you are cutting. Functionally it is no substitute for a conventional Chef’s knife or any other kitchen knife for that matter.
That said, the Chop is high-design at its most unique and would make a great Christmas gift for someone who is more interested in enhancing their modern kitchen countertop than preparing food.
